Young Architect

Young Architect

This is a very helpful, and at times controversial, blog from the perspective of a young architect about 5 years out of school. The site began as just another design blog but completely transformed into something else not too long ago. He began writing posts from his perspective for those just starting in the field or still in school. Reading his opinions I at times become scared about some realities that we all must face, especially his belief that the C students eventually become the bosses of the A students. So I would like to begin a discussion about this perspective and how you all perceive the world of architecture at your current position in the field.
The C student is about efficiency and productivity. While their designs may not be as innovative as the A student, their talents will lend more towards successful completions of real life projects. As the C student continues to meet expectations within a company environment, they will advance into management or even start their own companies.

  1. It is a reality = fact. It is not true that all great designers are great business men. The study that C students take over the profession is not an exactitude. It is true that C students may be in the field longer, have more experience, and when younger A students enter the firm they are behind on the experience curve. The real world is more forgiving in certain areas a.) can you manage a project b.) do you understand clients c.) can you manage/work in a team. The list of characteristics of good business differ from good students. However; a driven, dignified, applied, and creative intern has the potential to become a great business man /super designer. Please share your experiences homies.

  2. OK, to start off- I want those chairs from the pic, dang those are nice.

I love the firm that I work for, but as I left the office at 1:15 AM on tuesday, said bye to our head graphic designer, I noticed that out of about 50 people that work here only 3 of us CARED enough to stick around to work on the 09 TSA award submissions. This year at the local AIA awards it was the first time in 10 years that anyone won more awards the Lake Flato, and we beat the poop out of them with 6 awards, all because a few guys stuck around late and made some SWEET presentations.

    PASSION & EFFORT-
Many people here lack that very thing, and that's what makes a difference in how far you go in the profession. There's a HUGE difference in running a firm, managing a project, and "designing" something, all positions require different skills. Our CEO doesn't do architectural work, he's mainly marketing, he busts his ass and puts in just as many hours as anyone here, and that's how he got to be the boss.

The point is that if you have a strong work ethic you'll go far. What good is a bad-ass designer/A student if he only only puts in his 40 hours and then goes home? Truth is grades don't matter for shit in the real world, it's all about how much you know and what you can do with it.
