Carlos Cruz-Diez
The seminar stems from the wishes, concepts and intellectual legacy of Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz-Diez. Many of his ideas focus on the innovating and downright revolutionary idea to question the state of dependence of the color to the form. Carlos Cruz-Diez wanted to liberate the Color from its subservient condition to the Form. The color becomes then an event, a random experience subject to the specificity of the viewer’s situation.
The seminar will be the experimental field in which the students will be asked to elaborate and construct “a Labyrinth of Deconditioning”. The idea of the Labyrinth stems from an unrealized project by Carlos Cruz-Diez in which he visualized several chambers where, upon entering, the spectator’s perceptions would be challenged by an unusual experience. He nonetheless did realized one the chamber with floating colored light which he came to call later the “Chromosaturations”. It was first constructed in Paris in 1969 under the name “Labyrinth for a Public Place”.
The class coincides with a full exhibition of Cruz-Diez's work at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. The show opens on February 5th.

10 bloodiest children's bed time stories
bloody hell
The list and the synopsis of the 'actual' bed time stories we were not actually told stoked an imagination I hadn't shaken up in a while. Dark, bloody and foreboding tales/fables. Amazing Disney created and entire empire out of americanizing the stories and turning them into cream-puff feel good movies.
The consideration to illustrate the stories in the truer form is something that should be done! I like the thought of Tim Burton redoing Hansel and Gretel, but not the Alice in Wonderland Disney style.
Hansel and Gretel write up suggested author/illustrator, Anthony Browne. I came across this gem Little Beauty while searching. Illustrations for Hansel and Gretel look awesome so I just bought 3 of his books. Definitely looking forward to stewing on these books when they arrive.

aquarium drunkard
Probably one of the best indie music blogs out there, Aquarium Drunkard, along with other great blogs like gorilla vs. bear, brooklyn vegan, my old kentucky blog etc. have a knack for throwin great mixes our way. The recent featured, TIDAL WAVE/MONDO, reaches delightfully across genres and is a juicy treat for the eardrums. find here

The Sketchbook Project
'It's like a concert tour but with sketchbook's" says the website tag line. Thanks to JKyle for sending this my way! What a cool idea for a tour. You can select a theme and the tour swings through Brooklyn, Atlanta, San Fran, Austin, Portland and Chicago. Books are cheap, you can get it scanned and lots of people can see your work and you can see theirs. You have to use their Blue/Red moleskine book but other than that it's pretty open ended as long as you do something in the book ...

Gun Hoofs

"Under normal circumstances, the words "gun," "hoof," and "shoes" would have no reason to be used in the same sentence, but artist and designer Iris Schieferstein combines all three together in her plainly named "Gun Hoofs," a follow-up from her disturbingly realistic plain-hoofed version. More art object than actual footwear, these shoes make an ironic statement about the paradox of taxidermy: That in death, the animal achieves immortality, and we're sure the gold-plated revolver doesn't hurt the late goat's street cred. A bizarre hybrid of the Margiela hoofed shoe and the Chanel gun pump, these babies are must-have pieces for any serious satyrialist. (Design Milk)."
wow! we all know people who like guns, but goats too? that's certainly taking rural design to a whole new level.

moleskine collection I
just went digging through some older moleskines i had laying around - the following are from 3 skines all of which went on a couple travels to europe with me - i'll post another series soon ...
_cliff dwellings
composed of planes, lines and points along cliffs these creations cantilever over canyon rims, cliff edges etc. the concept that they are temporary and can be anchored to the earth and cliff sides with structural components by drilling and hanging fastening.
_kinetic iterations
fluid pieces of objects, materials, moving parts assemblages and fragment amalgamations compose these concepts of imagined architectures. scale is left to the imagination. i think of time pieces blown up in scale. these are quick vingnettes plan/elevations/sections of an object - i draw these quickly with pencil first, usually never picking up the point, (similar to the idea behind the singing line in japanese prints) ink the pencil, add dashed lines representing layering of parts and then fill in parts that are critical or unique.
where do these go now? they are really just snippets of a larger idea ... how would one take it to the next level?

(2) Digital to Analog filtration is expressed by various fabrication techniques allowing for new opportunities:
(3) Analog stitching on acrylic plates provides an enhanced intended relationships and connections. All stitching is one continuous thread:
(4) A triptych is then used to describe an iterative series and sequence of opportunities within the designer's applied rule sets:

I created this series of of collages with inspiration of found imagery, textures, objects, words, numbers and scenes - then interpreted, placed, and arranged the scenes. adding motion to the flatness of the collage with illustrative systems of simple machines like pin connections, joints, pulleys, ropes, hatches, swing arms assert movement. each panel/fold is representative of an act, a starting point and together are one play.
